Our Little Woman

NOVEMBER

===== By JACK NAKAMOTO ==
The 27th in a Series

For our little woman with bowlegs, here’s a “standing invitation” to learn the art- of standing. Yes, she
can handle her bowlegs wisely as to give them the
illusion of being normal legs.
According to Eleanore King, Hollywood’s foremost
authority on charm, the first thing for our Niseiette is
to realize that the only reason her legs appear bowed
is really because there are two of them. If she com
pares one leg with the other, she’ll find that the legs
look not only normal but quite attractive. For some
reason, a pair of parentheses, like this () offends the
■ eye’s sense of symmetry-—if a pair of legs is involved.
Yet a single parenthesis like this ) has a graceful curve
So the idea for her is to avoid placing her legs in an
identical position, side by side, toes pointing straight

In England recently a couple observed their 74th
wedding* anniversary, and, the wife had attributed their
long successful marriage to her believing always that
her husband knows best about everything. Here’s a
bit of wisdom which our little woman should always
apply in her dealings with her boy-friend, husband or
any man for that matter. Although he may be wrong
actually in lots of things, the principal idea neverthe
less is not to hurt him by puncturing his masculine ego.
So it behooves her to understand that he is, by instinct,
the aggressor, the go-getter who wants to protect and
provide for her. If she must criticize, she should enlist
the aid of that precious heritage of womanhood, yes,
her feminine wiles, to do so—perhaps by means of her
smile or by her gentle words that hardly make him
feel he’s “losing face”.

Miyoko Sawada, who once operated a school of
dress design in Vancouver and later in Slocan, and
who is now a dressmaker-designer in Montreal, reports
that she’s receiving good news from her former pupils
who had gone to Japan during the war. In a country
where western clothes are becoming more popular,
most of the students are doing fairly well with their
own dressmaking businesses and some are even dress
making teachers in schools.

What now ? - It’s a dress that broadcasts a woman’s
marital status, designed by Carrie Munn. Called “Be
fore Reno”, the costume is a demure thing in whitecollared velvet and there is a companion piece, “After
Reno” which is a brazen outfit in checked taffeta with
one bare shoulder. The former piece is a reflection of
a quiet, respectable woman, while the latter was creat
ed to liken the gay divorcee.
Reno incidentally, is
where one can obtain divorce in four weeks’ time, the
shortest possible time by law. However divorce ob
tained from there is not valid in Canada.
