Well, here it is, our annual
“baby”, the Christmas issue,
1951. We sincerely hope that you
will find enjoyment in its ~ 56
pages, the largest ever publish
ed. One thing you will notice is
that we have leaned a lot towards
pictures and cartoons this year,
more so than in other years, in
trying to make this issue as at
tractive as possible.
Besides the staff who worked
far into the night for about
three weeks, bent ovex- typewrit
ers on Sundays, picked type, set
the slugs into place, worried
over the layout, and all the other
countless tasks of the newspapei'
trade, we were blessed with the
help of contributors about whom
you may be interested.
Our contributors this year
ranged from the veteran to* the
novice. The subjects should sure
ly appeal to every taste—from
politics to jazz (a prettv wide
range).
Several of the writers took
hard and critical looks at the Ni
sei and themselves. Hideo Mimo
to. whose article, “The Nisei And
His Japanese Heritage”, repre
sents the first time he has written for. the NC, has bi’oached
the . subject of Japanese culture
in its relation to the Nisei, a
problem that is certainly promi
nent in our sphere today. A
thixd-year studexxt in sociology
at the U. of Toronto, we think
his effox-t is an auspicious debut
in our pages.
Fred Kayahara who has often
leaned ovex' our office desk to
tell, us about his interesting ex
periences in trade unionism, has
written anothei' one of his pun
chy treatises about politics as

To enable the staff to take
a holiday season vacation so
that they can return to the
regular twice-weekly schedule
in 1952 with renewed vigor,
there will be no issues of The
New Canadiaxx until Jan. 5.

When Robert Kazuhisa Naka

came the infant sought bv The
New Canadian as its “First Baby

to the innovation of the idea was
influential in our decision to hold

Now who will be oui’ first ba

are asked to submit “enti'ies”,

time of birth should be verified
by the attending physician ox'

The announcement should be

as soon as possible and not later
than Jan. 19. “Entries” ai’i'iving

given the award.
Offsprings born a week or so
after 1952 has been waved in,
still have an excellent chance to
win the honor. Statistics gleaned
