BUT. DON’T make the mistake
of jumping to conclusions before
you’ve heard both sides of the
argument. In this country we
give every culprit a chance to say
his piece, you know.
Can the picture from the
other side be something like this ?
You are an executive member
of an organization that toys with
big ideas. Your treasury tells
you not to, but your group is
exuberating with
enthusiasm.
The only conceivable way to raise
the necessary funds is to an
nounce an advance sale of tickets.
But announcing- ticket sales
doesn’t mean a damn, so you have
to go canvassing.
Two weeks before your pro
gramme you arrive at this stran
ger’s door. He is as friendly as
the proverbial mother-in-law, as
suspicious as a jilted lover. You
desperately try to find some
thing to say to him, but his in
difference and coldness acts as
an iron curtain between you. You
talk and talk because you can
never seem to find the appro
priate moment- to make your
proposition. You don’t even have
the satisfaction of cajoling your
customer, while he has the satis
faction of seeing you get on your
knees and beg. He buys your
tickets, finally, with a Hook that
says:
“Well, just this once, but damn,
if you come again . . .” You leave
his dwelling, disgusted and de
feated. richer by a few dimes
that aren’t yours.
This whole business of oshiuri and giri-gai has got to go —
it isn’t helping anybody.
