the conclusion must be that people
w’ho have not seen Presley in the
flesh or on a screen, simply can
not visualize his act.
Candidate No. 1 for the JapanPresley title, one Miehiya Mihashi,
does have the wooden jaw, long
hair and sideburns of Presley. But
there the resemblance ends.

Presley lurches and leaps with

the joy of the uninhibited. Mihashi
is so bashful in front of a mike,
even a spectator feels pain. Miha
shi shuffles on stage in a man’s
kimono, strums his samisen (a
three-string cat-skin guitar) and,
obviously embarrassed, sings folk
tunes—Japanese folk tunes.
His
audience, country folk involved in
the “Where's Elvis?’ hunt, overflow the aisles.
Candidate No. 2 was Kazuya Ko
saka. He has one disadvantage at
the outset: Can sing.
‘Grand Ole Opry’

Kosaka, just like the real Presley,
draws yelling, cheering teen-agers.
He is the star of “The Wagonmas
ters,” a well-established Japanese
band devoted to American western
music.
“The Wagonmasters” appear on
stage and television in_ their highheel boots and 10-gallon hats. But
they all yodel and fiddle. It sounds
—not like Elvis—but a slightly
eerie rendition . of "Grand Ole
Opry."
