Eisenhower opened the Seaway last June, tension
mounted in the bridge as Captain Oda, insites and
pilot trained their binnoculars towards the gates
where two smaller freighters were about to emerge
for Montreal while listening to instructions radioed
by the I<ock Master,
During these tense moments, the crew was busi'y
engaged in lowering huge logs fastened on each
end by strong ropes on both sides of the ship for
protection against the lock walls, After only u
half hours' wait, the all dear, proceed ahead signal

had very little room to spate leaving only eight

Ar the filling of the St. Lambert Lock pro­
gressed, there came this very siui.e-chilling squeeknig and shrieking sound which lifted the hmr off
