VANCOUVER, B.C.—There are approximately 1,600 graves
in the Japanese section of Vancouver’s Mountainview Cemetery
and practically all burials in this section took place over fifty
rears ago. It is believed that most of the families are now living
out side of the Vancouver area and consequently the graves have
been left unattended.
Many of the stones that were erected did not have any foun
dation laid and were simply placed on the base stone. Over the
rears, these base stones have . tilted and the result is that the
vertical stone is precariously standing on this. In examining several
of such monuments, it was found that they would topple over with
a slight touch of a hand. Due to the danger involved, the main
tenance people have purposely laid some of the stones on the
ground. Some have been apparently knocked down by vandals.
Some people have come to believe that the City is responsible
for the maintenance, but actually practically all burials took place
at a time when the City did not accept responsibility for main
tenance, other than the occasional cutting of the grass.
