Japanese Students Plan Lecture Tour
Japanese Actor Finds U.S.
Movie-making A 'Vacation'
HOLLYWOOD.
When an
actor muffs his lines on a Hol
lywood sound stage, the director
is invariably tolerant. After ail,
the fellow may have had a rough
night, maybe nursing a hangover. “Come on, baby, let’s T
it once more” is the soothing ad
monition.
Tatsuya Mihashi, Japanese rc^antic screen idol, making his
Uni^ States debut in the Frank
Sinatras, movie, “None But the
Brave,” looked upon this pam
pering in uWsi^r astonishment.
It doesn’t
like that jn
Japan.
Y
“We miss our Vines once and
we get a scolding from the di
rector,” says
Myhashi. “If we
should flub twice f in a row, we
get a nastv note (from the pro
ducer. That’s because film stock
is expensive in Jan*m and not to
be wasted.”
The necessity 5or being letter
perfect in din-Jog^e and action
when the camera starts rolling
is the n^dn difference between
makir-g motion pictures in Tokyo
raid in Hollywood, he explained
to Sinatra, who directed as well
as starred in the movie.
Of Sinatra’s methods, he said:
“He was very expert, very under
standing—but he did shoot a lot
of film.”
“In Tokyo, we rehearse many
days, often a week, before rhe
real action is tarred,” added Mihashi.
“Over here, I was surprised to
find that you often do not re
hearse at all until the time of
filming. And sometimes, as they
say, ‘we play it by ear’ but the
Hollywood way keeps an actor
much more relaxed.”
Plays Commander
The slender actor, who plays
the commander of a lost platoon
in “None But the Brave,” cites
other differences, most of which
he likes better than the Japanese
style. especially the working
schedule which is seven days a
week on Japanese sets. “I felt
as if I was on vacation all the
time,” he enthused, “and I wasn’t
at all scared about flubbing my
lines with so much extra film
available.
co-production
Mihashi,
in
deal, was brought to Hollywood
with 11 other Tokyo actors to
play Japanese soldiers in the
World War II movie. It actually
was a three-way arrangement.,
with Warner Bros, holding the
money bags and the filming done
by Artanis Productions (spell it
backward and you get Sinatra)

Japanese Students Plan Lecture Tour
Japanese Actor Finds U.S.
Movie-making A 'Vacation'
HOLLYWOOD.
When an
actor muffs his lines on a Hol
lywood sound stage, the director
is invariably tolerant. After ail,
the fellow may have had a rough
night, maybe nursing a hangover. “Come on, baby, let’s T
it once more” is the soothing ad
monition.
Tatsuya Mihashi, Japanese rc^antic screen idol, making his
Uni^ States debut in the Frank
Sinatras, movie, “None But the
Brave,” looked upon this pam

It doesn’t

“We miss our Vines once and
we get a scolding from the di
rector,” says
Myhashi. “If we
should flub twice f in a row, we
get a nastv note (from the pro
ducer. That’s because film stock
is expensive in Jan*m and not to
be wasted.”
The necessity 5or being letter

is the n^dn difference between

raid in Hollywood, he explained
to Sinatra, who directed as well
as starred in the movie.
Of Sinatra’s methods, he said:
“He was very expert, very under
standing—but he did shoot a lot
of film.”
“In Tokyo, we rehearse many
days, often a week, before rhe
real action is tarred,” added Mihashi.
“Over here, I was surprised to
find that you often do not re
hearse at all until the time of
filming. And sometimes, as they
say, ‘we play it by ear’ but the
Hollywood way keeps an actor
much more relaxed.”
Plays Commander
The slender actor, who plays
the commander of a lost platoon
in “None But the Brave,” cites
other differences, most of which
he likes better than the Japanese
style. especially the working
schedule which is seven days a
week on Japanese sets. “I felt
as if I was on vacation all the
time,” he enthused, “and I wasn’t
at all scared about flubbing my
lines with so much extra film

Mr. Kaneko studied journalism

lecture tour he will act as an
interpreter at the Canada-JapanU.S. fishery talks in Ottawa this
fall and then return home to
Tokyo where he will become a
