enlarge her breasts by injecting silicone wax into them.
Tokyo police said they suspected negligence in per­
forming surgery. Some 15 to 20 girls received treatdaiN at the clinic for eyes, nose and breast
beautification.”
.There are more than 300 of these hospitals and
clinics engaged in cosmetic surgery, about a fourth
of them concentrated in Tokyo. They have manv fore­
ign customers as well as Japanese. *

studying at Waseda University in Tokyo came into one
of the clinics and told the doctor: “I finally managed
to get used to Japanese life after living in tataminiat rooms and sleeping on the futon bedding for two
years. My next step is to make myself look Oriental
, so I’ll be less conspicious among the people here.”

Perhaps the most famous of these cosmetic surgeons
is 54-year-old Dr. Kobe! Matsukubo, who has made
well over- 100,000 alterations to the faces of Japanese
women in the past 20 years.
American and European women constantly worry
about the outcome. One doctor complained that before
the operation, they invariably said: "Are.
the operation will be successful?’ ’ And even after they
were put on the operating table, they would ask:
"Will I be all right, doctor?” or “You don’t think I'll
regret it later, do you.” Asian women, in contrast, arc
usually very relaxed.
The time required for an operation ranges from
15 minutes for- eye and nose surgery to -air hour- re­
flacting busts. The latter type of operation is often

Earnings Down From Last Year
TORONTO. — The Toronto Japanese Canadian
Cultural Centre’s total income from operations
(excluding donations and contributions) of $53302.28 less expenses totaling $51,828.54 (including
$14,000. hi realty taxes) has left the net revenue
of $1,473.84 for the year ended March 31st, 1967,
it was reported by the Treasurer at the Annual
General Meeting held at the Centre on May 15th.
“However, the final figure shows a deficit of
$14,914.88,” reports the Centre, “because of bank
