Japanese Skier Of Mount Everest

VANCOUVER. —Japanese skier Yuichiro Miura

Simon Fraser University in Vancouver.
Miura and his party of 800 ascended all but
the last 3,000 feet of the Himalayan mountain.
In his search for speed, Miura said, he has

his search.
Using a specially developed parachute, whicn
slowed his speed to 40 mph, Miura skied l1? miles

The wind created havoc with his parachute am:
the ice was so smooth there appeared to be no

He believed his death was inevitable when a

Japanese Skier Of Mount Everest
Tells Of His Death-defying Experience
VANCOUVER. —Japanese skier Yuichiro Miura
said last week he felt a sense of doom as he
hurtled down the icy slopes of Mount Everest.
At one point he reached speeds of 111 miles an
hour, the skier and author told an audience at
Simon Fraser University in Vancouver.
Miura and his party of 800 ascended all but
the last 3,000 feet of the Himalayan mountain.
In his search for speed, Miura said, he has
skied such peaks as Mount McKinley and Mount

Rainier. Mount Everest was the culmination of
his search.
Using a specially developed parachute, whicn
slowed his speed to 40 mph, Miura skied l1? miles
down a 40-degree slope.
The wind created havoc with his parachute am:
the ice was so smooth there appeared to be no
way of stopping. At the bottom of the slope was
a deep crevasse, he said.
He believed his death was inevitable when a
rock outcropping knocked him
off his feet.
