Influenced by Zen and Confucianism, the developmen
shido gained impetus from the Kamakura period, begininng4^ '
the 12th century, but the name now used to identify the creed
during the civuwas __
appears to have been first applied to it uuimg
period of the 16th century. Later, Soko Yamaga ( 1622-85)
bushido its final rationalization, equating the samurai v. tlujihe;
Confucian “superior man” who exemplifies virtue to the lb*
classes.
Bushido encouraged acquiring athletic .and military skill
accorded respect to such virtues as frugality, kindness and hon
But paramount in the code was the fostering of a martial
and martial virtues.
Filial piety was extolled, but loyalty to the feudal lord
precedence over duty to parents. The samurai must be reaay

When Nitobe wrote his interpretation of bushido. Japan$hat
only recently defeated China and had begun to emerge as a wor»
