Story Of An Issei
Manservant, John Kitazaki
By BILL HOSOKAWA
CHICAGO.—One day back in the early 1920’s, John H. Wed
dell, a well-to-do industrialist, and his wife Marion advertised .tor
a man to care for the yard of their luxurious home in nearby
Glencoe, Ill. The first person to respond was a young Japanese,
John Kitazaki. Mrs Weddell was shocked when she answered the
door and realized this man was applying for the job. She had nevei
seen an Oriental before. The thought of an Oriental working for
her was repugnant, and she was not the kind of person who could
mask her feelings very well.
“I’m sorry,” she said as gently as she could. “I’m afraid you
won’t do.”
Kitazaki didn’t have to be told why he was being rejected,
and the droop of his shoulders as he turned away must have be
trayed his disappointment.
At that- instant Marion Weddell was overwhelmed by a wave
of compassion for the stranger, a sense of shame at her own
lack of sensitivity, and a great desire to make amends. “We have
a job for you,” she said hurridly, “and a room where you can stay.”

The possibility of producing enough works of ‘other things’ in

‘survival’ pieces and he must patiently wait foi an opportunity,
the ideal situation these days being the productive union of teach

The Japanese Canadian community in Greater Vancouver
numbers approximately 10,000 people but does not actively support
a fairly quiet J.C.C.A.
Mrs. Michiko Kadota is an energetic individual, concerned
with maintaining communication among the 2,(00 families. From
her flower shop on Granville Street, she organizes a monthly
bulletin, supported only through advertising, and sends it out to
each family free-of charge, hoping that these pages of chit-chat
will create a quiet web of unity in the community. She also runs
a variety of classes of Japanese crafts (including Bonsai, con
ducted by Mr. Roy Sumi, head of the Nitobi Gardens at UBC).
Mrs. Kadota, an Issei, is convinced that the emerging generation
of Sansei (they are a much younger group out West) will be a
dynamic supportive group, caught up in their search of identity
through Japanese culture, and will revitalize the present stag
nating organization. Considering the current activity of other
minority groups, she may be right.
