'The Nightless City" is a history of the Yoshiwara prostitution
area — the crotch of Tokyo — from its inception at the request
c-f brothel keepers in 1617 until 1S99 when this book was first
published. This new edition by the Tuttle company is a reprint
of rhe fifth edition of that early volume.
The name T oshiwara comes from the reedy swamp of the first
site, which was to remain Japan's red-light, district (yukwaku)
par excellence until the Calvinist Occupation after World W.ar 11.
Over the years the tightly knit community inside built up a
multitude of traditions, and pleasure became quite complicated.
J. E. De Becker cataloged a wealth of information which makes
the modern tourist guides seem quite inadequate by contrast. He
has compiled a Who’s Who of the 'Whores and a sort of 'Yoshiwara
on 5 Yen a Day’ which includes detailed maps listing the exact
whereabouts of every brothel and a host of illustrations.
De Becker’s book is also an encyclopaedic collection of every
form of behavior in the T oshiwara.. It is a major social study
which is all the more useful for bridging- and embracing the social
mores of both the Tokugawa and Meiji Eras. As Terence Barrow
says in his introduction to this 1971 edition: “If the text were
iecast and brought up to date with recent statistics, it would do
credit to a present-day anthropologist.”
