Skiers . . .
“When I went to the Interski
conference in Aspen in 1968 the
estimate was
about
7,000,000
Japanese srfers,” Air. Johnston
^aid. “The latest estimates in
dicate about . 11,000,000.
That
might be a bit high.”
Mr. Johnston, a former presi
dent of the Canadian Ski Instruc
tors Alliance, suggests the real
impact
of
visiting Japanese
skiers will be felt in Banff in
three or four years. Right now
the trip to Canada is expensive.
The airfare will be about $600
and each skier must pay for his
own accommodation, meals and
lift tickets, about $30 for each
day spent in the country.
The ski tours to Canada will
have the visitors on the slopes
about seven days. They will rest
tired muscles during a four-day
stay in Honolulu on the way
home.
The number of Japanese an
nually leaving the country to ski
is
steadily
increasing
said
George Ghori of the Japan Na
tional Tourist Organization in
Toronto.

The New Canadian

“We estimate a million Japa
nese will see the world as tour
ists this year. More and more A
they are coming to North Ame
rica. I know there is great inter
est there about Canadian skiing
.and to come to Canada they
don’t need visas.”
Mr. Engesser said that as far
as CP Air is concerned the Japa
nese reaction to skiing in Canada
has been phenomenal.
“In a way it’s a bit shocking
for Canadians as most of the
skiers from Eastern. Canada
prefer to-take their ski holidays
in Europe.”
