KOBE. — Japan’s biggest criminal syndicate, the

Akinari‘based many of his tales on ancient Chinese novels and
ancient Japanese literature. Dr. Tanaka tells us that Akinari’s
stories show considerable fidelity to these sources, but that the
author used them only ,as a vehicle to establish His own theme. The

lation of the sixteenth episode of the Chinese “Stories Old and
New,” but the intensity of the human emotions in “Reunion” make

The tianslator has done a great job because this does come
through in “Reunion” — in my view the best tale in the book.
However, the losses incurred in translation must have been even
moie foimidable than usual. Akinari frequently adopted language
and structure from the classics and was meticulous about the words
and plirases he used. He would write double meanings by using both
tanji and hiragana alongside one another. It is fortunate that Kenji
Ramada, the tianslauoi is so thoroughly bilingual, because his
English version is very good-’
