of a play was “Julius Ceasar,”
by the late Dr. Shoyo Tsubouchi
in 1884, who by 1928,

years before his death, had ren
dered all the works of Shakes
peare, with the exception of a

over 100 years1 ago. since the Ja
panese began to take an .interest
in the works of William Shakes
peare. Nowadays hardly a day
passes without Japanese visitors
to the birthplace of the Bard <of
Avon, and the Royal Shakespea
re Theatre at Stratford-on-Avon,
and the second largest delegation
to the International Congress of
Shakespeare Associations in Wa
shington, D.C. soon will be from
Japan.
The first complete translation
of a play was “Julius Ceasar,”
by the late Dr. Shoyo Tsubouchi
in 1884, who by 1928,
seven
years before his death, had ren
dered all the works of Shakes
peare, with the exception of a
few sonnets, into Japanese.
The name of
Tsubouchi is
synonymous with that of Sha
kespeare in this country,
for
he did more than any to spread
knowledge and appreciation of
the works, and in 1928
was
responsible for the establishment
of the. Waseda University Shakepeaxe Museum.
The first, recorded performan
