Japanese Are Said To Have Unique Brain Mechanism: Ear Dr

to explain differences between
Japanese- and Western cultures

The Japanese scholar then ex

foreigners in
Japan and discovered that his
key-taping test was
valid: all
foreign subjects recorded the ri

the same Japanese vowel “a.”
Dr. Tsunoda went on to test
the brain dominance of Japanese
and aliens over various other so
unds and came to the following
conclusions.
Both Japanese

aliens

the generally recognized pheno

As regards the sound of Japa

noted that traditional Japanese
instruments are taught not by
means of musical notes but., by
ordinary phonetic symbols.
Now, what does this mean?Dr. Tsunoda interprets it as sig

| Sardines Becoming No. 1 Catch
TOKYO. -— Sardines: have be
come the primary target of fish
ery catches in Japan’s coastal
sea this year to take the place
of mackerel.
Fishery experts attribute the
phenomenon to a shift in ocean
environment such as an abnormal
flow of the Kuroshio Current in
the Pacific.
According to fishing industry
sources, there has been a great
er catch of sardines this season
than previously dn the waters off
Hokkaido, Japan’s northern is
land.
To the astonishment of local
fishermen, however,
mackeral,
which had been the primary catch
hardly are caught at all now.
The sardine catch unloaded at
Kushiro Port alone so far has
exceeded 100,000 tons this seas
on.
~
iSardines, mackarel and herring
belong to the same fish family
: and live off plankton in northern
low-temperature waters.
These species compete
with
each other for food and one spe
cies of fish may sometimes re
produce in large enough quanti
ties to dominate the area, there
by becoming a primary
catch
target.
In fact, the primary catch tar
get in Japan’s coastal sea has
changed many times from one
species to another since the begining of this century. Mack
erel became the dominant catch
in the late 1950s. An official of the Eastern Re
gional Fishery research Labora
tory of the Fishery Agency in
Tokyo said that a "structural

shift” in the ocean environment
might contribute to such pheno
menon.
The official pointed out,
as
one of such shifts, the abnormal
flow of the Kuroshio
Current
which glances off mainland Ja
pan into the North Pacific.
According to the official, the
width of the Kuroshio Current
has been abnormally
swelling
in the waters off Kii Peninsula,
Kinki Region, attaining a width
of about 100 kilometers since
the fall of last year.
(Such abnormality in the Kuro
shio Current was observed for
the three consecutive years from
1959 to 1961. During the peri
od, the primary catch
target
switched from Pacific sandy to
mackerel.
Such coincidence
seemingly
substantiates the theory that the
shift in the species dominating
the sea is related to shifts in
the ocean environment.
Although such a relationship
is based on a still tentative then- ,
ry, fishery
experts
forecast I
that sardines will remain the pri
mary’ catch target in
Japan’s
coastal sea in the coming deca
de.
