The basic tenet cf Jodo Shinshu is that a man cannot achie
ve ultimate fulfillment because
of bis human limitation. No 'ma
tter how hard .he may try, his
efforts are still relative. There
fore, he must come to a true re
alization of his finite, limited ex
istence and at the same time"awaken to the Absolute Compa
ssion of Aim id a Buddha. “Why
pursue" the Buddha, He’s pursu
ing-you.”
Throughout Kimura
Sensei’s
book we find examples of prison
ers, artists, priests, poets, farm
ers, housewives — people from
all walks of life — giving testi
mony to the depths of their re
ligious insight and striving.
The ibook is full of anecdotes.
The artist who sees the ima
ge of Kwan non in the shoyu blot
on the table cloth; the prisoner,
condemned to death, finding sph\itual freedom: the American Ni
sei soldier who valued his myo
go above all else and numerous
others.
Rev. Gibun Kimura writes wi
th pathos, humor, insight and religious devotion.
I recommend this book to all
Buddhists and once they have
read -it, they would want to refer to it over and over again.
I might also mention that Ken
Yokoyama has1 done a remarka
ble job of translating the origi
nal Japanese text into English.
It is not a literal translation and
it seems as if the original text
was written in English.
