Critical Decisions On Elderly Care
By MIN OTA
TORONTO. — At the next meeting of the J.C.C.A. Committee
for Elderly Care, some difficult decisions on very important issues
vzill have to be made.
It is an acknowledged fact that immediate aid is required for
a segment of our community. However, uppermost in the Committee
members’ minds will be the welfare of the Japanese community in
Ontario for generations to come.
Some questions to be discussed:
With 85% of the Japanese population in Ontario centred around
Metro Toronto, can the Committee endorse the immediate request
upon the community for contributions to expand the facilities of
an existing Old Age Home in Beamsville, Ontario?
If feasibility studies indicate that, wiith the participation and
the facilities of other Japanese organizations, a centre for Elderly
Care in Metro Toronto within 5 years was possible, would the com
munity be prepared to give financial support at that time?
As most residents are aware, most pensions are insufficient
to cover the operating charges of Elderly Care. Government or
other welfare organizations do subsidize the difference and in this
instance would the Japanese community be prepared to give its
support.
Although many citizens feel that “Nursing Care” is most ur
gently needed phase of Elderly Care, opinions have been expiessed
in some quarters that this service would be an impossibility in Me
tro Toronto for Japanese only.
These are but a few of the heart tugging decisions the Commi
ttee must decide upon, and it would be in the very best interest of
each member of pur community to personally voice his opinion.
Location: The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, Don Mills.
Date: December 13th, at 8:00 p.m.
