“We noW know, however, that
the plotopteridae occupied such
niches in the North Pacific for
an undetermined period prior
to the end of the early Miocene
period (about 30 million years
ago),’’ the scientist said.
Some scientists have theor
ized that the giant penguins of
the same time their cousins in
the, south died out because of
competition from seals and
porpoises, which also began to
flourish during the Miocene
period.
Olson and Hasegawa said
that since the plotopterids died
out at the same time as their
cousins in the south did, they
j also may have been pre-emp
ted, by seals and porpoises.

TOKYO — Scientists have
found fossils j»f. some of the
largest swimming birds yet
discovered on earth, penguin
like creatures that in some
cases stood more than six feet
. tall.
Fossils of the previously un
known bird family, called plo
topterids, were discovered in
. Japan and the state of Washington, according to a report
published recently in Science
Magazine.
Rocks bearing the fossils in
dicate the birds lived at least
50 million years ago.
Dr. Storrs L. Olson of the
SmitAsonian Institution’s Wseum of Natural History and
Yoshikazu Hasegawa of the
National Science Museum in
Tokyo said the flightless mar
ine birds apparently used their
wings to drive them under
water, as do' present day pen
guins.
