ed to' quit!”

?

Each time he threw me, I no longer landed but literal y
collapsed. Each tithe. I managed to raise my self,, for it was
now a contest - between a conditioned. technician and my
spiritual heritage. At. fleeting moments I even entertained
“I’ll, shame him into quitting!” for by this time he had beaten
me to a pulp. Mercifully, one of the sensei s stopped the
onslaught and to this day I get an occasional sore back at
tribiitable possibly to this.session.
Was it worth it? You’re damned right!! because if you don’t
stand for something, you’ll fall for-anything. I remember Dave
Ban telling me the story where he was hosting a fellow black
• belt from Japan. He marvelled at how meticulous the guest
was, the bed always kept, shoes and clothing exact. Whbn
asked why he was so neat and disciplined, the simple reply
was “I am always prepared for death and should anything
happen, I would not wish to cause Mei-Yaku (be a burden).”
' I guess I’m representative of a dying breed of Nisei, who
were^brbught up on verbal pablum such as “Gambare” (never
say quit) ,“Bariki”' (Endurance) ’’Yamato Damashi” (Japa
nese, indomitable-spirit) etc. ' .
It wasz Nakahara Sensei (now residing in Toronto) who
had-instilled in me the credo of Bushido, and I’ll never forget
this .gentle Spirit tackling the great Frank .Hatashita in
Chemainus to a draw. Mas-Takahashi (with whom L share a
love affair with Katanas and Tsubas) I respect and admire.
When most would--have retired from competitive tourna
ments, he reached the finals against the giant Wronski in a
Quebec tourney. Although Mas lost the contest in my mind
he won hands down with his display of the true meaning of
the Judoka! As you may know the Takahashi family in Ottawa
from wife to childen, are recognized internationally not only
in Judo but also in wrestling.
As" a kid in Paldi, B.d. (7 miles from Duncan) my herods
were the Asahi ballplayers and the Judokas; the Sugas, Unos,
i-Marun'o, Shiraishi, Tanaka, Yamamuras, and in judo it was
the Hatashitas^ Sasakis, Omoris.
Possibly with the passing of time, one is inclined to over
embellish the past, but damn it, I: sure do yearn for those
^X go-for-broke days!!
