Evening ef court dance,

at Hart House on October 29th

By BILL MARUTANI
As of this writing I’m fight
ing a “summer cold.” Last

Saturday

ming one chore or another,
\and thought nothing of it.
Until the next morning. Not
being’ one given to medic< ation if I can avoid it (I very
seldom take aspirins, for ex
ample), I’m leaving it up, to
my body’s "natural defenses"
to get rid of this cold, but the
malady hangs on, sore throat.
and all. Then 1 began think
ing of some home remedies
that my Issei mother might
administer; and beyond hot
salt water I could’t think of
' the
other
ingredient(s):
Vinegar, was‘it? Grate in
some
shoga? Wife
Vicki
chuckled as she observed me
concocting this witch’s brew
with which I gargled.
There were, indeed, a num*
ber of home remedies that'my
Issei mother employed, and
although I was the recipient
of some of them, I can’t recall
just what.they all .were, or if
1 do recall one or two; I don’t
know the formula. Except for
one, which I’ve never used
simply because as a lad, I dis
liked the stuff: okai, the
equivalent
of
the
Jewish
mother’s chicken soup, there
just might be something to it:
the Chinese, with their highlycultivated culture going back
thousands of years, have an
elixir using a dressed, whole
chicken which is slowly stemed (with some herbs, as I re
call), and the resulting potion
is
reputedly
a
universal
"silver bullet." As a matter of
fact, we happen to have the
necessary paraphenalia, in

pot and the dried herb, which
a kind, Chinese American,
Paul Young ^(San Francisco
peninsula) had sent to me a
decade or so ago when I was
battling cancer.

As f recall, my mother evert
had more remedies for our
. pets. If a cat, or. dog, showed
signs of serious illness, my
mother would proceed to cut
. off the tips from Diamond

pilot history
TOKYO. — A veteran Japan
Air lines pilot made his final
flight with his son sitting in
the copilot's seat.
Kinzo Hamamoto retired
when he reached the com
pany’s mandatory retirement
age of 60.
A wartime fighter pilot,'
Hamamoto joined JAt in 1952
and now boasts 20,653 flight
hours,
the second - longest
among active, JAL pilots.
On his last workday he and
his son piloted a jumbo jet
from Osaka to Haneda to
Sapporo and back.
The airline made special
arrangements for Hamamoto*#
son, Masayuki, 36, also a JAI
jumbo pilot, to fly with hl#
father on their one and only
joint flight.
It is very rare, throughout
the world, for father and sort
to be jumbo captains.
'Offered
a bouquet of
flowers prior to his last flight,
the senior Hamamoto saidthat he was very happy and
hoped his son would become
a better pilot than he.
Masayuki decided to be*
come a pilot while in junior
high school when a DC-7
piloted by his father developed an engine fire over the

Pacific in June, 1959.
~
His father saved the lives
of the 62 passengers aboard
by " making an emergency
landing on Wake Island.
. Masayuki, who joined JAt
In 1967, became a DC-3
pilot at the age of 30 and a
furribo pilot In Mdy.
