Aftertaste
When talking about his
summer, Hamaguchi says he
seems to remember it in slow
motion. “It's the size of the
land up there. You hear a
sound like thunder and when
you look, you see boulders
the size of houses tumbling
down a mountain. But it's
so far away_everything seems
to be happening in slow
motion.’’
And there's the taste. “I
had only freeze-dried food for —
about a month. I don't care
what color they make it, it
tastes like papier machg.”
He's still sorting through
thousands of photos and
hopes to prepare a one-man
show. He's looking for inte
rest from galleries.

The find has been linked
t^Fompeii because of the ex
cellent state of preservation.
“Judging by the enormous-.
toss of the find, the Japanese
town was obviously a highlyprosperous
trading
center
which relied on commerce
with China." Matsushita said;
He added that the town’s ex-;
istence was
discovered
in
1928 when the local govern
ment began building retain
ing walls along the banks of
the Ashida river.
The town covers an area of
75,600 square yards and was
ringed with primitive for
tification of sharpened wood
en stakes. He said it had a
main street and a road Trad
ing to a dock area that was in
tricately paved with local
stone; '

He said it is impossible to
preserve everything, but .that
the best items eventually,
will
be

"So far. only half of the town
has been excavated," Matsushita said. "We still have a
