Sen. Inouye: Evacuation could occur again

said recently that internment in violation of civil rights
could happen again if Americans, are not “constantly

independent federal commission on relocation and internment of civilians he helped form. The group will eventually

“You can't,prevent something like this by laws,” he
said. “I don't care what you put in the books. It would depend oh constant vigilance of the American people. In
times of stress and hysteria, notwithstanding the provi-,

can happen.”

Between 1942-1946, 77,000 Japanese Americancitiz®ns and 43,000 Japanese nationals were held against their
will in camps across the country.

“Living Treasure” survives shark bite
HONOLULU — Excitement
and nsksiare a way of life for
Leo A. Ohai who has survived
a plane crash at sea, a boat
fire, and the bends. Now,
Ohai has added a shark attack
to his list of adventures.
The shark had been trailing
Ohai's fishing vesel, Libra,
for several days. A crab trap
caught in one of the boat's
propellers. When Ohai dove
to cut the line, the shark
moved in.
“It wasn't a big shark,”
Ohai said from his hospital

bed. “I thought the best thing
to do was to go straight for
him. I would never turn my
back on a shark.”
He managed to fend off the
shark with a knife, but suf
fered a bite on his right hand.
Doctors later removed a
piece of shark's tooth.
Ohai, 59, has been distin
guished as a “living treasure”
of Hawaii by a Buddhist mis
sion for his mastery of one
traditional Hawaiian art, deepsea fishing.
