ing the achievements of the
6,000 Nisei Hnguists who
were an American “secret
weapon” in the Pacific War.
The exhibit is well-deserved
recognition of the tremendously valuable role.these men
played in various parts of
the vast Pacific front, -fer
reting out information that
shortened the war and saved
uncounted American lives.
There seem s to be little
doubt that so far as the Ja
panese high command was
concerned, the Nisei linguists
were a secret weapon, or if
they knew, they didn't know
what to do about them. But it
is not accurate to say the lin
guists were “one of the bestkept secrets’’ of the war that
had been “an untold military
secret until only recently.”

There.was hardly an adult
among the 110,000 Japanese
Americans in the relocation
camps who didn't know what
their sons, husbands and
friends in the Pacific theater
were-doing. And one of their
sources of information was
the Pacific Citizen which car
ried many a story about the
heroism of Nisei linguists.
But the word never got to
Tokyo during the war, and
that says a lot about loyalty.

• 16 Ways To Avoid Saying
No, by Masaaki Imai, Nihqn
Keizai Shimbun, Inc., Tokyo,
1981 (2200 yen).
What is it like to do busi
ness in Japan? A number of
new books appearing this
year deal with this question.
But perhaps none offers a
briefer, clearer, more read
able 'account of business
practices unique to Japan
than Masaaki Imai's 16 Ways
To Avoid Saying No.
, As head of an international
management consulting and
recruiting firm inTokyo since
1962, Mr. Imai has the expe
rience and special knowledge
to help western business
leaders see Japanese man
agement from the inside.
The first section of 3-to-4page articles composing this
140-page book gives back
ground, aspects of the culturak context in which Japan
ese management takes place.
Here western readers may be
gin to anticipate that such a
different world will necessari
ly demand different methods
of doing business.
