Kawamoto is the fireball coach of Mohawk men'svolleybalI team, the.1981 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association
champions who are leading the way in 182 as the season
heads into the stretch run.
Volleyball is an exciting game to watch, but Kawamoto
is a bonus. As his wife Joyce puts it: “He is there on the
f loor for every point, even though he is only watching.”
Kawamoto is originally from Vancouver but has been in
volved in volleybalI in the Hami Iton area for more than 20
years, in 1967, he coached a local 16-and-uhder all-star
team to a provincial championship.
His wife is also immersed in the sport, as she coached
the Mohawk women's team to the Canadian finals in 1975.
She has taken a break to raise a family.
Even though Kawamoto appears ready for heart failure
in the rare event of his team making a ‘stupid’ mistake, (it 's
only; the stupid mistakes or a lack of effort that gets him
hopping) he takes the game quite calmly in retrospect.

The main advantage of the
gene bank, Hatanaka noted,
is that researchers will be
able to work on cures for
genetic diseases without first
having to go through the complex process of extracting
and then recombining genes
before the actual research
can begin.
Since the causes for many
genetic diseases are believed
to be hidden inside the DNA
of afflicted people, Hatanaka
is hopeful the gene bank will
lead to cures and preventive
methods faster than would
otherwise be possible.
