MajOr, Vincente Munoz,
head of the police division,
said the two officers in the
search party found a rope
woven from coconut husk, a
piece of bamboo that could
have been used as a drinking
cup, a tin plate and a piece of
autowire.
The items found in the ex-

implements found in a cave
occupied by Sgt. Shoichi
Yokoi, a Japanese straggler
returned to civilization in
January 1972.
Munoz said he is not confirming that there is g Japanese straggler in the area,
“but, judging from the items

The police chief described
the cave as found in an area

Sexist Japanese Men
By DELPHINE HIRASUNA
There is no Jove lost between me and men from Japan (re
cent arrivals, that is). The cultural gap is far too wide to be
bridged by anything stronger than cordial acknowledgement.
As a group, Japanese men tend to be sexist.
I ' ve always suspected that Japanese men are offended by
many Nikkei women, particularly Sansei. They grudgingly ac
cept the differences in non-Japanese American women who
are obviously foreigners in their eyes. Sometimes they even
make an attempt at Western chivalry - allowing women to go
first, holding their hairs/helping them with their coats. It's
an amusing little game, a strange Western custom;
However they stop when it comes to accepting women as
equals. A hakujin girlfriend who holds a fairly important (titlewise) position in a Japanese firm found that out quickly. “It 's
obvious to me how that they just wanted me to meet their EEO
quota. I ' m their token white female executive,” she says. “I
have a fancy title, big ofice and staff, but when it comes to be
ing involved in decision-making, I'm excluded. I attend man
agement meetings, but they never ask my opinion and when I
try to offer it, I'm told I'm out of place. So much for wonderful
Japanese management.”
At least her identity is clear to them. Japanese men are
much more ambivalent toward Nikkei women. Japanese Amer
ican women look Japanese, so it's assumed that we should
act Japanese. After all we're only a couple generations re
moved from “proper” breeding. We should somehow have a
genetic understanding of their inherent superiority. Some:
Japanese men will play the chivalry game, sighing that we've
been spoiled by American ways. Chivalry, to some extent, is
recognition of male dominance and so it's okay to indulge the
weaker sex.
Japanese American career women are met with almost
open hostility. These men from Japan are not amused. We
look too much like their wives and daughters. We are a threat
to their status quo. God forbid, if we should give our sisters in
Japan any liberated ideas.
During my week-long stay at the New Otani recently, |
kept picking up subtle negative vibes. The fact that we were
both in town on business did not create any common bonds.
Japanese men seemed disapproving of my eating alone in the
coffee shop and generally acting as if I was my own boss.
However, our resentment was mutual, our anger was mut- b
ual. I saw now reason to apologize for the freedom I enjoy.

I IWatanabe Wins Title by Whipping Pedrozal
TOKYO. — Japanese chal
lenger Jiro Watanabe won a
15-round unamimous decision
over Panama's Rafael Pedro
za to earn the World Boxing
Association's junior bantam
weight crown in his first title
bid in Osaka recently.
American referee Larry

Rozadella raised Watanabe's
hand before the scorecards
were turned in.
Rozadella scored it 150 to
135 for the Japanese challen
ger. The other two judges,
also Americans, favored Wa
tanabe with 149-136 and 148138 scorecards.
