Lofty “warrior” of the smallstones
By NANCY KNICKERBOCKER
Dr. Keiji Shimizu is 55 and a splendid warrior, just
coming into his prime. He holds the lofty rank of 6 thdegree black belt. In 1981 he captured the Canadian title.
But his is not a martial art; it's the subtle, complex,
and warlike board game called go.
The go board is a battlefield. So much so, in fact, that
Hitler introduced it early in the war to train Nazi soldiers.
The 361 black and white stones are described as soldiers,
battleships or troops. The object is to seize territory by
encircling and killing your opponent's men.
Go players don't talk about ability or talent; they speak
of strength.
The current world champion is a 16-year-old Chinese
boy, Xiao-chung Ma. “He is very, very, strong,” Shimizu
says. “Much stronger than me.”
Go - in Chinese' it means “small stones” - is more
than a parlor game or a mock war. It embodies the Oriental
concept of inextricable opposites: yin and yang, black
and white, life and death, victory and defeat.
It has profound mysticism and morality. Consider
these go proverbs:
