A bell from Japanese
Canadian history found
NEW DENVER, B.C. — A relic from Japa
nese Canadian history emerged recently in
this mountain hamlet which once acted as a
Japanese Canadian “evacuation centre” dur
ing World War Two—a hand bell.

The bell,, dated 1934, was given to the
local Japanese Association recently by a
New Denver Public School. An inscription in
English reads: Shisei-Kai, 38th Graduate,
1934, Japanese School.
The bell has been verified by former Van
couver Japanese Language School Principal,
Mr.Tsutaye Sato, as one use at the school
nearly 50 years ago.
Any 1934 Goggako graduate interested in
the bell should contact the following: Mr. S.
