TOKYO. -- “Ah so, yah'all! And howdy friends and
neighbours!”
Japanese performers in buckskin jackets and cowboy _
hats are singing through their noses in English about
folks that done wrong, picking out the bluegrass numbers
like “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” as their audiences in
rooms bedecked with Texas flags whoop and tap their
toes in time.
Yep, the Japanese urban woods, if hot really full of
them, offer a healthy sprinkling of country-music and
bluegrass bars, some playing only recorded music but
others featuring live home-grown talent.
In the western Japan port city of Kobe, for example^
one may hear the unmistakable notes of “Dueling Banjos”
coming from atinybar called Lost City.
The sign in English says: Saturday night-Grand Ole
Opry time. Live band 7-11 p.m. Come on in and have a
ball.”
