Japan police report increase
in violent intra-family crimes

TOKYO — “Mother Kills

Father.

The headlines tell the story.
About 11 per cent of the 1,754
homicides reported in Japan
last year were within a family
— parents killing children,
children killing- parents, and
spouses killing each other.

Japanese see promise in
investing cash in Canada
OTTAWA — Canada is a promising country for Japanese
investment in the long term, according to the report pf a
Japanese survey mission that recently toured Canada.
But Canada cannot expect any immediate surge in investrnent by Japanese companies, a Canadian trade official said,
The lengthy report has not yet been translated, blit Edward
Lumley, Minister of State for International Trade, said preliminary indications are that it is very favorable to Canada.
Japan is aware of Canada's desire for investment in man-

ufacturing, increased employment, exchange of technology
and promotion of exports.

Of the 193 family murders
last year, 138 were cases of
infanticide.
National Police Agency sta
tistics show the number of
family murders has declined
from the recent yearly high
of 275 in 1972. But there ap
pears to be an increase in
cases of violent family crime
in general. .
“You could say that family
violence is a big problem
now,” said Toshiro Nozawa of
the Tokyo-based NPAs crim
inal investigation division.
The NPA keeps no overall
statistics on family crimes as
such, but it has conducted
surveys over the last- two
years on violent acts by juve^ on page 2

I was over on Wilshire in West Los Angeles a couple of
weeks ago shopping for some stereo components for my
car, and as I was gazing into one of the LED-illuminated (
dials of a particular unit I was interested in buying, I notic
ed there was some excitement over in the installation
area of the shop.
Some guy and: his girlfriend had become embroiled
in an argument with one of the salesmen and was insist
ing that he order one of the Latino installers to pull the
Sony that had just been installed in their new Pontiac
Firebird out of the car, wires and all.
Maybe this guy knows something about these new
Sony XR-55s I don't, I thought, and I walked over toward
c
the discussion.
. But no, it wasn't.the tape mechanisms or signal to
noise ratios or FM sensitivity that was being debated at
all, but where the radio was biiilt.
“Listen,” the blond surfer-type in the UCLA T-shirt
told his embarrased girlfriend, “I told you I didn't want
anything foreign in this car...”
'
The salesman told the guy that he would gladly take
the Sony out but added it was probably the best unit his
shop carried.
“Nothing Japanese, man,” spit the surfer. “This is an'
American car. My family buys American. We care about
our country.”
.

i
“Fine,” smiled the salesman, “have you decided what
receiver you'd like me to put in instead?”
“Not yet, but it'll be the Pioneer or the Kenwood.”
