More Japanese coeds turning to cosmetic surgery
By TOSHIO JO
TOKYO — The. French novelist Stendhal, once said,
“Beauty is.the promise of happiness.” And today in Japan,
the evidence indicates that many female college students
believe beauty-even if it's arificial - is the promise of
many things, including employment.
An increasing number of female college students have
been haying cosmetic surgery, mostly for foreign-looking
double eye lids, in recent years, according to some Tokyo
orthopedic hospitals.
Particularly large numbers of college women and some
high school girls, visit them for cosmetic surgery in the

The reason for the “early spring rush” is apparently due
to the women' s strong desire to start their careers with
confidence after correcting what they consider “defects,”
the hospitals observe.
“A lot of young women today no longer have conserv

Sugi said one of the things
she liked about living in the

“In Japan, it's considered
unusual for old people to go

many older people do so, and
nobody makes a fuss about
it,” she said.
Reminiscing about the •
