By RICHARD MORIMOTO
MONTREAL — The Japanese
Canadian Cultural Centre of
Montreal will be publishing an
information directory next year,
which will focus on the various
activities of the Montreal Japa
nese Community (not only those
sponsored directly by the JGCC
but also those sponsored by the
Buddhist Church, Japanese Uni
ted Church, Language School,
Japan Society etc.) from April
1982 to April 1983:
The book will include photo
graphs of the year's activities,
an updated version of the Japa
nese telephone directory (1977),
and information on the various
activities and services available
to the community. It is hoped that the book will
be entirely financed by adver
tising and that each family in
the Japanese Community will be
sent a copy next summer or fall.
Anyone representing the var
ious groups such as Sunday
Drop-In, Choir, Japan Society/
churches, language school, sen
ior citizens, cooking classes,
library etc. and who would like
to write about their group or activity will be allowed space in the
book. Those who wish to reserve
space in this book for their club
or activity should contact me as
soon as possible.
Volunteers are needed for typ
ing, photography, looking for
advertisers, telephoning people
to check the accuracy of the
telephone directory etc. etc.

TORONTO — Richard Bennett, one of North America's
; leading ceramic artists, will hold his first show in Canada at
the Gallery Quan, 112 Scollard Street, Toronto, December 4,
1982 to December 31, 1982.
Though a scholar in Far East Affairs and fluent in Japanese, Richard Bennett today chooses ceramics as the main
medium through which he melds the East and the West. His .
shapes are simple but his pieces are remarkable for their
glazes. Bennett as well trains apprentices in Japanese tech
niques, addresses university audiences, receives visitors
from all around the world and jets back and forth to Japan.
The artist has exhibited in Japan, Europe and the United
States. In 1985 he is expected to have a major exhibition in
Japan when only 50 and will be one of the few Westerners
ever so honored. Richard Bennett's ceramics are in the col
lection of The Chase Manhattan Bank; The Prudential Insurance Company of America; Sen Soshitsu, Urasenke, The
Grand Tea Master of Japan; Abe Eishiro, Living National
Treasure; Shimane Prefectural Museum, Japan; Ralph Lauren; ,
Woody Allen; and The Hancock Shaker Museum, and others.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Richard Bennett has
worked and studied for many years in Japan where" he main
tains a residence and studio.
Mr. Bennett holds a Doctorate in Orientral Studies from
Harvard University and next year will be Chairman of Colum
bia University's prestigious Seminar on Modern Japan.
He has accepted an invitation from the Japanese Cana- '
dian Cultural Centre to deliver a lecture and exhibit his works
in early 1983.

STANFORD—Auto engines

developed at Stanford Uni versity, a researcher said here
recently.
Gordon Kino, professor of
applied physics and electrical engineering, said his research team has solved the
problem of detecting defects
in the ceramic during manu
facturing.
“We have developed a
whole range of theoretical
; and experimental expertise,
and are able toevaluate ex

said. “We are even able to preJ dict what stresses would cau
se such ceramics to break.”
He said Toyota and Toshi

10-year plan to make automo

materials.

7 “Engines can be made_out,
of very cheap materials, such
as silicon. Crudely, speaking, they a re m ad e I a rg e Iy of sand
and because they can withstand very high temperatures,
tend to be more efficient,”
.said Kino.
He produced a sample of
the new ceramic, a cylinder
of smooth black translucent
material made of silicone and
nitrogen. With no flaws, said
Kino, the silicone nitride cer
amic would be much stronger
than the steel now used in
airplane engines.
“It is as strong as tung

for cutting steel,” said Kino.

on red u c i n g ma n u fac t u ringcosts of the super tough
