Nipponia Home plans
25th Anniv. celebration
By Jack Oki
BEAMSVILLE, Ont. — Now that the facilities of Nippo
nia Update are completed and being thoroughly enjoyed
by the residents, plans to decorate the gardens are being
created by Jim Koyanagi and Tom Torizuka.
A Japanese style “dry” garden will grace the indoor/
outdor court and will be called the “Yamage Court.’
The main garden, named the “Nipponia Issei Garden,”
will have walkways nestled between shrubs and trees in
digenous to Japan that do well in Ontario. Selection will
be made with assistance from the chief horticulturalist of
the Hamilton Botanical Gardens. Benches and a tea house
will offer resting spots for the residents. It will have a
centre piece in a typical Japanese Garden.
The Rose Garden, that has always been a highlight of
the Home, will be re-built and called “Komiyama Rose
Garden” in honor of the first President^
A recent Globe and Mail article headlined “Homes for
the retired graced by green park.” The article went on v _
to describe the makeup and reasoning behind four new
“therapeutic.parks” in Niagara area Homes for the Aged.
Nipponia's Gardens will set a new standard for such a
park with specially designed raised garden plots which will
let the residents enjoy one of their great joys of planting
seeds and having them grow into beautiful flowers without
