TORONTO — “Keiko” — a film directed by Quebecoise
Claude Gagnon and his wife Yuri Yoshimura Gagnon, will
have its Toronto premiere at Harbourfront theatre (364-5665
for information) on Sunday, January 23, 1983, at 3:00 p.m.
Born in December 1949 in Quebec, Andre Gagnon went
to Japan in 1970, the year of Osaka International Expo. Living
in Kyoto since then, he has continued to produce some films
of his own production with the collaboration of his wife, Yuri
Yoshimura Gagnon, a, woman producer. They had to face the
difficult conditions of film sel-production in Japan.
“Keiko”is the first-theatrical film of-feature length pro
duced by his production. “Keiko” tells us about a Japanese
office girl, graduated from a university for young ladies, ask
ing us what is true liberty through her lonely life.
Through “Keiko's” character, Gagnon wants to express
with realism and from the impressions, experiences^ and
thoughts he accumulated during his last nine years in Japan,
the tenderness as well as the strength of the modern Ja
panese girls.
z
Four years have been necessary for this project. The
recording and the set up were made simultaneously under
refined technics and all locations were carried out in Kyoto
and Nara, the most traditional areas of Japan.
In order to avoid hackneyed actions the film scenario,
has been well defined in advance, none of the dialogue was
written. Each actor has been asked to spontaneously impro
vise his own words in order to create the most natural ac
tions as possible.
_
For the realization of the film, the whole team of young
technicians and actors has been boarding under the same
roof for two months, trying to make the best with a minimum
manpower and finances. Such a boarding-life experience
during which all communications were carried out in three
languages, French, English and Japanese, has enabled the
whole staff to create the natural feeling and actions which
are reflected.in the film.
All the characters are Japanese, most of them nonprofes
sional who have been selected among the public in order to
avoid creating any rigidity.
*
Miss Junko Wakashiba, the main character, is a theatrical
actress and has performed in all the scenes with perfection
in spite of the difficult role she was given to execujte.
Andr6 Pelletier, one of Gagnon's childhood friends who
also lives in Japan and has helped Gagnon since the reali
zation of his first film, has perfectly handled the making of
“Keiko” difficult photographic technics and succeeded in
reflecting Gagnon's feeling on the film.
Jun Fukamachi who made the music set his heart on this
film: “I made it with great pleasure because I could reflect
my own opinions and thoughts in the film. I could not have
done the same in any other ordinary Japanese film.”
In the transitional epoque of the Japanese movie indu
stry, “Keiko” was well accepted as a new type of film realised
by the revolutional film technics.
Gangnon's Keiko might be a challenge for the Japanese
film industry.
