Japanese Canadians seek $50 million for war uprooting
TORONTO — Canadians of Japanese origin, will ask for $50 million
from the federal government in compensation for the uprooting, deten
tion and evacuation suffered in British Columbia during World War II. This
was revealed recently by Mr. George Imai, a spokesman for the repara
tions committee of the National Association of Japanese Canadians —
the umbrella group for Canada's estimated 45,000 Japanese. It links eight
major community groups across Canada.
The money, said Imai, would establish a foundation geared to com
munity needs, racial harmony and human rights.
Imai said such a foundation would build a nursing home for older
Japanese Canadians, “who bore the brunt of frustration, misery and loss
before and during the war.” It would also “embody the long-awaited
apology and signify, at the same time, the end of a horrid chapter in
Canadian history.”
The compensation bid follows recent demands by Japanese Ameri
cans seeking compensation from their government.
The fund, set up for the Japanese-Canadian community in general,
would be “the wedge” in reparation settlements, since individuals will
likely seek personal compensation, Imai said.
A community delegation will soon travel to Ottawa to meet with fede
ral authorities, Imai said, and make their case for the $50 million, based on
the Charter of Rights.

The work
ethic
By Bill Marutani
A key precept in the set of
work ethics handed down to
us by our Issei parents is one
that focuses on “result.”
What this means is that the
worker — whether it be in a
farm setting, a factory, an
office , or in one's own business — is to accomplish a
certain goal, to get the job
. done. And, we might add, to
get the job done well. Such
noble, but quaint, concept in
the labor market has been out
of step with the prevailing
outlook in our society; that
outlook, generally stated, is
to stretch-out-the-job and get
more pay for less work.
We've mentioned before
an experience we've had in
this regard which may illustrate what we mean. During
World War II (just after the
Navy rejected this writer on
account of race), we finally
got a summer job working in
a defense plant producing
pontoons for the navy. On
the assembly line of welders,
there soon were a number of
Nisei. As we recall, produc
tion rose from two units a
day to eleven. This made the
plant owners very happy, but
the union shop steward was
perturbed. He took a number
of Nisei aside, including this
writer, and demanded to know
“What the hell is going on?”
The steward pointed out that
before his contingent of Nisei,
came on the assembly line,

Justice Minister Mark MacGuigan said last month he
would consider asking a

summer job in Victoria, B.C
fell through this year because
of the economy, he decided
to. take the summer off “because I had just finished four
years of intensive study” for
the B.A. in landscape archi

But the ‘summer off,’ meant
doing a project in landscape
design for his father, getting
his private pilot's license
and setting up his own com
pany (C. K. Okashimo and
Associates) so he could do
some freelancing.
In fact, “spare time” to him
usually means learning something new. After high school,
in which his high academic
standing got him an Ontario Scholarship Award, he
accompanied his father who
was on a sabbatical, and
family to Japan, where they
stayed a year.

Before going to Hawaii

EXCITING TIME
“I was there in time for the
