It was about 1930 that an
exciting event took place in
our farm house, for that was
the year some enterprising
young salesman from Van
couver sold us a portable
- gramaphone. You had to
crank the handle and change
the needle each time. It was
called the Columbian and I
think my father paid about
$30 for it. That was a great
deal of money then, but he
felt that some sort of music
would be good for us since
we lived way out on the farm
without any of the cultural
advantages of the big city.
Soon Japanese records
with music and songs would
be heard in our farmhouse.
I don't know how much rec
ords cost, but they were slow
ly acquired about as often as
my father went into Vancou
ver. Some were the old-time
stylized songs of old Japan,
but our favourites were the
popular songs.
Without that old windup
gramaphone, I'm afraid, we
would not have been exposed
to any type of Japanese music ;
or songs.
It wasn't until 1934 that we
acquired a radio, so during
our formative years that gra
maphone was the only ..link
we had with Japanese cultu
re. We didn't attend Japa
nese School until about the
time we got the radio, and
we could not read-and still
can' t read — Japanese books
and magazines.
After my father died in Jan

The firm says it will place the machine in stores with
thirsty, late-night customers. Machines which vend alco
