The U.S. report said Roose
velt signed the detention
order without “any careful
or thorough review of the
situation.”

“I'm surprised the blame
was put on Roosevelt alone,
since all western politicians
were to blame, as were our
politicians in British Colum
bia,” revealed Imai.

Imai said there is a long
fight ahead in lobbying the
U.S. Congress and Senate to
pass a compensation bill.

Yoko proposes 'Peace Poll
“We as the human race
have a history of losing our
emotional equilibrium when
we discover different thought
patterns in others,” Ono said
in the ad, headlined “Sur
render to Peace.” ■
“Many wars have been
fought as a result. It's about
time to recognize that it is all
right to be wearing different
hats as our heartbeat is al
ways one.”
Ono proposed a “nation
wide peace poll” to vote for
peace versus nuclear holo
caust of any size.
The poll should “be autho
rized by the (U.S.) Congress
as a national undertaking for
the sake of expedience alone,
with the balloting through the
media to minimize admini
strative expense,” Ono said.
“It’s time for you to raise
the flag. I feel John and I, as
a unit, have done our share.”

' “Our role is to help people
who really want to separate,”
she said. “Japanese women,
in particular, don't get to
choose their own lifestyles.
In Japan today they are bound
by the family. I thought reach
ing out ajiand to women suf
fering in marriages that had
failed would be one way of
achieving the ‘women's libe
ration’ we thought about as
students.”
“When the reasons for the
breakdown and the will to
divorce are clear, we talk with
both the husband and the
wife, and act as go-between
in arranging divorce condi
tions both can accept,” Shi
moda said.

“If the husband is clearly at
fault, we advise him to pay a
settlement commensurate with
his. responsibility and make a
clean break,” she said, adding that things seem to work
out best if the wife has cus
tody of the children.
Since the center opened in
late 1981, 15 cases have been
fully resolved, 13 of them in
divorce ,and two in Reconci
liations.
She said many cases could
not be settled satisfactorily
by legal mediation or court
action. And whereas couples
facing problems could once
turn to their marriage gobetween (usually a respected
mutual acquaintance or family
friend), in these days of “love
marriages” and go-betweens
’n name only, that avenue
now seems closed.

simple.)
We recall once, hearing someone point out that a marriage involving inter-racial
couple was simply a marriage
of two people, and not a mar
riage of races. At the time we
heard it, we paid little atten
tion to it and, quite frankly,
didn't understand it. Inas
much as we remember it to
day, obviously we were pay-

ing a bit more attention than
we credit ourselves for; as for
the understanding part of it,
we think we've grasped it.
Entering into an inter-racial
marriage must, we think, in
volve a couple of people who
are “different”, in an affirm
ative way, from the run-of-themill folks. But we're probably
all wet on that. When it comes
to love, it is absolutely blind; it
doesn't stop to assess irrelevancies such as color. Not
even the smell of tsukemono.

TORONTO — The J.C. Cultural Centre will initiate a Senior
Daytime Program on Wednesdays commencing in April. Its
entire facilities will be made available for those desiring to
spend an enjoyable day at the Centre in the friendly com; pany of others.
With more Nisei reaching or approaching retirement age,
: the matter of instituting such a program was mentioned in
’ the Newsletter over a year ago. Since the Centre is hardly
j used during daylight hours on weekdays, it could not be put
• to a better use tl^an a gathering-place for those with time on
their hands who are seeking an informal, relaxed fellowship
that it could provide.
While it will likely take several weeks and meetings to plan
’ and organize the program, once it gets on track, the members
could easily take over to initiate and schedule their week- to-week activity. Ideas for program are endless — some of
it could be structured, while others would be informal and
impromptu. Indeed, several activities could be carried on
simultaneously. Some suggestions are: games (goh, cards),
entertainment (music, video), physical (exercise, dance), lec
tures (health, investment), creative (art, handicraft) or just
plain socializing.
Nor do they need to remain confined. When the weather is
■ better, why not arrange to gather at the Caledon site, or picnic
