was Kobi's warning to a very young Sonny. He listened as
Kobi's work for the Public School Board was mentioned, of
the first Fishing Derby Kobi organized for kids, taking them
out to someone's tobacco irrigation pond. Of the many trips
to the Exhibition which Kobi organized. Who will forget, lining
up to be greeted by a gracious Japanese cotiple, the first Con
sul General from Japan to Canada following the War?
He heard of Kobi bringing life to twisted limbs, of his work
with the hockey clubs, always free, pulling the aches and
Charley horses from the bodies of young and some older men.
He watched the smiling faces, the outstretched hands of
Kobi's myriad of friends, reaching out to him whenever he
. passed by. He felt the joy and the enthusiasm in the crowd
of over 400 people who came forthat loveliest of all sights —
' children learning discipline, learning to accept pain, bowing
to the person who administered it.
He saw a display of Japanese culture from Judo, to Aikido
to the martial art of drumming, to the delight and grace of
Japanese dancing.
There was one thjng no one mentioned, however. We've
learned from Kobi, the importance of ‘face’! But I mentioned
it. Mr. Hatano said, “the day after Pearl Harbor, this man left
his office, took a deep breath, and walked up Main Street. He
was rebuffed. His office was defaced several times. But he
persisted. He made us rise above the horrors of conflict to
see the man — one man, in a hostile environment. Actually,
for most of us, Kobi was the only Japanese we had everseen.
He first gained our respect, then our love. We love both him
and the culture he brought to us, year after year, the best of 1
Japan.”
Mr. Hatano didn't say, ”ah so.” He accepted what he did
not know and he's coming back because;as.Mr. Kimura says, ;
the annual New YearCelebration will contunue, as will Kobi's :
legacy to a grateful community. As Lin Yutang would say of f
