Professional angler, Bob Izumi
BLENHEIM, Ont. — Gone are the days of the bent-pin,
Huck Finn style of fishing because the pros are taking over.
One of the new pros is 24-year-bld Bob Izumi shown with his
equipment for landing the big one: the fish finder and ultra
modern equipment.

BLENHEIM,. Ont. — Bob
Izumi of Blenheim is a new
breed of professional fisher
men .. The 24-year-oI d j o i ri ed
the pro ranks some three years
ago: the competitive fishing
tour, the speaking engage
ments, the sport shows, the
promotional work, the scram
ble for sponsors, radio, tele
vision—and always themany
days on the water to test, to
hone angling technique.
“With that heavy diet of
fishing,” he was asked, “what
do you do on yOur holidays?”
“I haven't had what you
would call a non-fishing, liein-the-sun, do-nothing holiday
since I turned pro. But if you
gave me time off right now to
do what I want, I'd go fishing
— I love it.”
His enthusiasm for angling
comes naturally. Bob's father
Joe Izumi was well-known on
Lake Erie for his angling skill.
“I had a great teacher in my
dad. He died two years ago.”
Filial pride was evident. “He
was one of the originals, the
founder of Canadian bass
tournaments. He started the
one in Rondeau Bay nine
years ago.”

One of their co-adventures
was a try early last December
at the $75,000 in prize money
of the Florida Invitational
tourney on Lake Tohopekaliga. “It was my first Bass Ang
lers tourney,” Izumi said, a
major move Onto the real pro
fishing trail. “Made a lot of
friends — Jimmy Houston is
a funny man, his TV show is
great; Al Lindner is a super
person, was up here in Tony
Rerrie' s booth at the Sportsmen's Show and says he'II

this year. They're real pros,
never hold back, always ready

Of the Lake Toho tourney,
where the Izumis finished
just out of the money, he
found that “the fishing isn't
all that different from up here.
Largemouth are largemouth.
But almost 300 entries! And
yet it was so organized.”
“Anything you'd like to
see incorporated in ournaments up here?” an itinerant
angler asked.
“There's a chemical,” Izu
mi said. “I think it's made by
Jungle Labs — they put it in
the live well of each tourna

overcome stress and start to
replace their natural slime

It works. I'd like to see it
used in every tournament
here. It makes sure that a big
fish will live to get caught
again, provide someone else
with the thrill.”
