TOKYO— Erasers that look
like and smell like popular
snack foods are enjoying a
boom among school children
but, to their disappointment,
the erasers will disappear
from the market at the request
of consumer organizations,
the Ministry of Health and
Welfare, and the Ministry of
International Trade and Indu
stry. Officials say that the
erasers contain poisonous
colorine substances.
Scented erasers were put
oh the market three years
ago. Eraser makers originally
added scent to their products
to disguise the unpleasant
odor. The erasers come in
more that 20 different frag
rances, including strawberry,
cola, ramen, curry and choco
late. There are now about 500
kinds on sale.
Ministry officials said that
there is the possibility that
children and elderly persons
will swallow the erasers be
cause they look so much like
snack foods.
TOKYO — For a long time there has been a Canada-Japan
Society in Japan. It recently marked the 30th anniversary of its
re-activation after the Second World War. In fact, there are
several Canada-Japan societies, in various regions of Japan,
and last autumn the first All-Japan Liaison Meeting of society
representatives was held at the Imperial Hotel, Tokyo. Repre
sented were societies of the Kansai region, of Hokkaido (the
northern island), of Akita, of Hokuriku, as well as the “natio
nal” society.
