Manitoba J.C.'s reject purchase of own cultural centre building
WINNIPEG — Manitoba Japanese Canadians have rejected the idea
of purchasing a building for a cultural centre in a*ballot sent to mem
bers of the Manitoba JCCA recently.
Out of 439 ballots returned 293 (66.2%) were in favor for the building,
141 (32.1%) were against, and five (1.1%) spoiled. Some 664 ballots
were sent out.
However, according to parameters set down by the Manitoba JCCA
Executive Council that “a building purchase for a cultural centre will
proceed only if two-thirds of the ballots sent out are returned and 75
percent of those returned indicated a ‘yes’ vote,” the purchase has
been rejected. Said Manitoba JCCA President Fred Kaita: “We felt that
those were the necessary parameters if we were to proceed.”
w
In a statement given after the the vote, President Kaita said: “As the
outgoing president, I believe that (a) a cultural centre is a catalyst required to nurture our cultural heritage for generations, a heritage we
should be proud to share with fellow Canadians; (b) in view of the above
results and the results of the November 3,1982, General Meeting which
was held at the International Inn to discuss the feasibility and
desirability of a Japanese cultural centre, the issue should continue to
be assessed by the MJCCA members and the Executive Council.”
The results of the November 3, 1982, General Meeting were: 41
members present of which 90% were in favour of proceeding.
