than the individual,” Mitsuhata explained. “A tremen
dous amount of importance
is placed on the family unit.
In western culture, there is
a great deal more emphasis
placed on individualism.”
What parents, grandparents
and extended family members
think carries more weight
for Japanese Americans and
thus Sansei who seek divor
ces have “more resistance
to overcome,” according to
Mitsuhata.
He said this resistance is a
significant factor and comes
up often during counselling
sessions -with those Sansei
who have strong family ties.
Mitsuhata helps the individual
• or the couple to look at the
situation — the alternatives,
the repercussions — and lets
them decide the course of
action.
“I don't take a position

Gardena - based licensed
clinical social worker, Sato

As a counselor, he is sensi; tive to the issue of cultural

can't measure the extent of
pts prevalence among his San’ sei clients. “I always know,”
; he said, “that it can be an ad• ditional emotional strain on

(2) But now, the JC Centres
need to respond to the issue
of redress. Some Canadians
are sufficiently concerned to
bring this matter to Parlia
ment, not to mention the
strong and favorable cover
age by the media. It is now
not “should redress be rais
ed,” says Kadota, but “to
what extent do JC's wish to
input on the issue.” Kadota
feels that if JC Centre can
conscientiously face this mat
ter, we may not only partici
pate as Canadians in clearing
this shameful aspect of his
tory, but develop organiza
tionally to the point that we

marriage,” he said.
Laura Shiozaki, also a lic
ensed clinical social worker
with a private practice in Gar
dena, said that though the
divorce rate among Sansei is
not as high as the one-out-ofthree marriages among the
general population, it is defi
nitely a departure from tradi
tional culture.
“Culturally you are raised
to believe you stay in a mar
riage. All the values of Japa
nese society teach you to put
up with bad situations.”
Shiozaki said most Sansei
are not involved in establish
ed community organizations
and decide for themselves
what their goals are and what
‘they want. This lack of community support has put more
pressure and strain on the in
dividual family unit.
“There's just too. many
pressures on the family to
do so much that the community used to do.”
