But Asians fared better
than Hispanics who weren't
invited at all, though they
make up 12% of the city's
population.
However, by looking at the
guest list it's pretty obvious
that politics and^ rewards
were very much on the Rea
gans' minds when they plan
ned the list of invitees. Wellknown Democrats were con
spicuously absent, including
State Senator Allan Cranston.
But if you assume that these
media events are planned as
much to draw support during
pre-election years, you would
think that considering the
ethnic makeup of the local
constituency would be very
important in thiscase — 22%
Asian, 12% Hispanic and a
sizeable number of Blacks..
But they say that politics
had nothing to do with the
guest list. Only the top Bay
Area movers and shakers
were included. That raises
even more serious questions.
Are there no Asians in the
Bay Area who are considered
powerful enough, influential
enough, interesting enough
to be invited to a state dinner
in San Francisco? If not, then
why not?
For the past several years’
Nikkei have been crusading
to have the U.S. government
acknowledge the racial injus
tices inflicted upon them dur
ing VVorld War II. That is all
well and good and necessary.
However, let us not overlook,
the immediate biases. The
condition that is hurting you,
your children and their child
ren to come is that Asians are
getting jobs but not rising to
positions of influence. Even
though Asians represent 22
percent of San Franciscans,
there are virtually no “recog. nized” movers and shakers .
among us.
That is the larger meaning
behind the Queen's dinner
guest list. It raises many
disturbing questions that det mand immediate examination.
