TORONTO — Over the coming weeks, two major opinion surveys
will be carried out in the Japanese Canadian community across Canada
asking questions on the evacuation and detention during the Second
World War.
A telephone poll of JCs, picked randomly but from specific gene
rations, is now being carried out in major centres across the country.
A questionnaire survey is also being conducted simultaneously
as the telephone poll. It's being organized by the National Redress
Committee, but distributed in various regions by major centres where
Japanese Canadians live.
The key question asked in both the poll and the survey centres on
the issue of redress and reparations.
Respondents will be asked whether they support a campaign for
financial restitution for losses of rights and properties suffered during
the Second World War.
'
They will also be asked which option they favor: (1) individual settle
ment for each JC or (2) a group claim with

, People around the world should put
aside their differences and realize “man
kind is one,” says the president of Rotary
International.
Dr. Hiroji Mukasa, a Japanese psy
chiatrist, yesterday visited St. Catharines
to open the International Friendship
Gardens on Pelham Road, the former site
of a city dump.
He told about 100 people at the opening
that citizens in all countries - have more
similarities in their personalities than difte re nee s.
“I encourage you to build bridges of
friendship throughout the worlds because
mankind is one.” he said.
He called the visitors to the park his
cousins because all people are descended
from the same ancestors, a connection
which will always keep the world a hu
mane place which struggles against evil
forces.
“Any tragedy of any nature moves us all
to tears,’’ he said. “Human beings are alike
and think alike and feel alike. There are no
differences.”
Dr. Mukasa praised the work of the two
St. Catharines Rotary clubs which com
bined efforts with St. Catharines city hall
to develop the 35-acre park.
“You have been building bridges for 62
years,” he said, adding local Rotarians
have done much to help crippled children
and young people “through boys clubs,
camps and scholarships.”
St. Catharines Mayor Roy Adams said
the completion of the park marks an end to
the “nuisance to the neighbors” who were
bothered by flying debris from the dump”.
“The people who suffered from a landfill
. site will now benefit from the beauty of
. this park,” said the mayor.
Dr. Mukasa arrived at the park accom
panied by a Niagara Regional Police mo
torcycle escort. The force also provided
plainclothes officers with radios to monitor
security.

, People around the world should put
aside their differences and realize “man
kind is one,” says the president of Rotary
International.
Dr. Hiroji Mukasa, a Japanese psy
chiatrist, yesterday visited St. Catharines
to open the International Friendship
Gardens on Pelham Road, the former site
of a city dump.
He told about 100 people at the opening
that citizens in all countries - have more
similarities in their personalities than difte re nee s.
“I encourage you to build bridges of
friendship throughout the worlds because
mankind is one.” he said.
He called the visitors to the park his
cousins because all people are descended
from the same ancestors, a connection
which will always keep the world a hu
mane place which struggles against evil
forces.
“Any tragedy of any nature moves us all
to tears,’’ he said. “Human beings are alike
and think alike and feel alike. There are no
differences.”
Dr. Mukasa praised the work of the two
St. Catharines Rotary clubs which com
bined efforts with St. Catharines city hall
to develop the 35-acre park.
“You have been building bridges for 62
years,” he said, adding local Rotarians
have done much to help crippled children
and young people “through boys clubs,
camps and scholarships.”
St. Catharines Mayor Roy Adams said
the completion of the park marks an end to
the “nuisance to the neighbors” who were
bothered by flying debris from the dump”.
“The people who suffered from a landfill
. site will now benefit from the beauty of
. this park,” said the mayor.
Dr. Mukasa arrived at the park accom
panied by a Niagara Regional Police mo
torcycle escort. The force also provided
plainclothes officers with radios to monitor
security.
