“Eager impatience” reported by
J.C. community in redress issue
OTTAWA — A former Progressive Conservative leadership
candidate joined ranks with the New Democratic Party recent
ly in calling for compensation of Japanese Canadians for their
internment and loss of property during the Second World War.
John Crosbie told a social policy workshop that the gov
ernment has a “strong obligation” to provide some compen
sation to the Japanese Canadians.
Justice Minister Mark MacGuigan has said the govern
ment is considering the possibility of providing some com
pensation. However, no government action — if any is to be
taken — is expected to come before a conference of Japa
nese Canadians this fall on that topic.
Lynn McDonald, justice critic, told the House of Commons
the government should be investigating the issue now, not
waiting for the fall conference.
MacGuigan reacted coolly to McDonald's suggestion that
Parliament should be involved in deciding the amount of com
pensation, but suggested that perhaps the Commons Justice
Committee could investigate the issue.
The minister also reminded the Commons that a royal
commission into compensation had reported in 1950 and
compensation had been provided “to a great extent.”
However, many Japanese Canadians say they were never
adequately compensated for the loss of farms and businesses.
The internees, many of whom lived in coastal British Col
umbia, were uprooted from their homes and sent to camps
further inland.
Of the replies, Ms.Inouye said only one
respondent had disagreed with the redress
issue. The rest gave approval to going after
a settlement on the issue.
A broader based eagerness was seen in
the rest of the country when local chapters
were asked to comment about the possibi
lity of postponing the September redress
conference to October.

You are invited to sip sake and sing
along at Maiko, an authentic Karaoke
Lounge. The Lounge is a haven to which
Japanese businessmen .retire, after a long
day, for refreshments and a light repast
in its care-free atmosphere.
Guests are provided with printed
lyrics and microphones to sing the songs
with full orchestral accompaniment
that emanates from the Karaoke Stereo
System, the only one of its kind in
Canada.
Everyone sounds good; this system is
echo-chambered to strengthen weak
voices and adjusted to suit each singer's
style. •
Truly a unique Japanese experience
