JAPANESE NEWLYWEDS COME
BANFF, Alta. — Thousands of Japanese tourists visit this small Rocky
Mountain town each year, many of them newlyweds more concerned with ac
quiring a Banff-stamped marriage certificate than with a week's skiing or sight
seeing.
_
“They have a Japanese wedding in Japan, with traditional Japanese dress,
then they come over here and dress in Western clothes and get married in a civil
ceremony at one of the local churches,” explained John Cimon, sales director
for the local Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise Hotel. Cimon, who is mar
ried to a Japanese woman, said the Japanese weddings in Banff are completely
legal because Alberta law requires only 24 hours residency before marriage.
Why do several hundred couples travel half-way around the world each year
to repeat marriage vows they took only days or weeks earlier?
TO BANFF TO REWED
Because the marriage certificate and wedding photos are “something to
show your family when you get back,” said Cimon.
He estimates Banff and Lake Louise, with a total permanent population of
about 10,000 receive at least 20,000 Japanese tourists each year.
Their importance to the economies of the_two towns located inside Banff
National Park, is apparent in many of the local hotels, restaurants and shops:
signs are posted in Japanese as well as English and sometimes in French:
“We have Japanese menus too,” Cimon said earnestly. “If we had 5,000
Germans, we'd post signs in German. What makes Banff attractive to the Ja
panese is the nature,” Cimon added. “The wildlife is wonderful to them.”
The vast expanse of forested mountains provides incredible pleasure to
people from a country
