radiowaves might be seen as a major gain for women in
the media. Margaret (Inouye) Lyons-a diminutive Japa
nese Canadian from Mission, B.C. — was named vicepresident of English radio in April when CBC president,
Pierre Juneau announced a reorganization.
She's the first woman to reach that administrative
level within the CBC. But Lyons is more excited about what
the new vice-presidency means for radio than what it says
about woman's status in broadcasting.
Lyons was in Vancouver recently to review her Hamil
ton Street, troops and took time out to talk about the
future of radio and her own past. And to explain why she

she said, obviously somewhat amused. “I think that start
ed as a joke when I was the head of current affairs. Area
heads are required to be —are allowed to be —Jess com
promising and I was rather uncompromising I think ... I
had very clear notions of how programs should develop
I also had a rather direct and unique style of evaluation.”
One gathers quickly that the lady knows herself rather
well. The key words here — uncompromising, direct, clear
— are how an outsider might also describe this 50-yearold broadcasting careerist with the economics degree.
Her style of administration mayraise hackles but it
obviously gets the job done.

100-year-old pictures
TORONTO — Over 150 pictures of Japanese Canadian life,
including a rare photo taken over 100 years ago, will grace the
book “Nikkei Legacy” written by Toronto Nisei writer, Mr.
Toyo Takata.
“Nikkei Legacy,” a project undertaken with the support of
a Wintario grant, is being published by NC Press Limited and
will be available on Octoberl5th.Mr. Takada is a former English
editor of The New Canadian.
The oldest authenticated picture, dated some 100 years
ago, shows a group of early Japanese fishermen that were
rescued following a storm and brought to Victoria in 1883.
Another photo in “Nikei Legacy” may be even older. It is of
a Japanese ship “Tsukuba,” which visited Victoria in June
1880. It was during the author's extensive research that he
made the discovery of that early voyage, and this was followed
