Two more dictionaries to remove offensive epithet
BERKELEY —“Webster's New World Dictionary, Second College Edi
tion,” published by Simon and Schuster, Inc., and “The Random House
College Dictionary, Revised Edition,” will remove or indicate the offensive
connotation of the abbreviation “Jap” in their forthcoming printings, it
was revealed recently by Berkeley researcher, Raymond Okamura.
“We have been aware for some time that the abbreviation ‘Jap.’ carries
for many people the same perjorative clip ‘Jap’...and we have already
adopted ‘Jpn.’ as the language label (for etymologies),” said David B.
Guralhik, editor of the “New World Dictionaries.”
Similarly, Stuart B. Flexner, editor of the Random House dictionaries,
stated “on our next revised printings we will add the ‘considered offen
sive’ label to the abbreviation ‘Jap.’, add ‘Jpn.’ as a main entry, and also
add ‘Jpn.‘ in the language list (for etymologies).”
Mirriam-Webster, Inc., publisher of Webster's New Collegiate Dictio
nary recently removed “Jap.’; and Houghton Mifflin Co., publisher of “The
American Heritage Dictionary;” plans to do so in the next printing.
Okamura opined that “within a few years, ‘Jpn.’ will replace ‘Jap.’ as
the standard abbreviation for Japan or Japanese in all'major American
English dictionaries.”
