“Me obo-eteru ka?” & “Oh, you ka!” at Cannery Resident Reunion
By JIM KOYANAGI
STEVESTON, B.C. — Former residents of Acme, Celtic, Terra Nova
and Vancouver canneries, totalling over 240 people, attended the Cannery
Reunion on August 20th and 22nd. It seemed as if the hands of time were
turned back 41 years, as though evacuation never took place, as expres
sions of “oh, you kal”, “me obo-eteru ka?” rang out all afternoon in the
Steveston Buddhist Hall, as old friends greeted one another.
The response was great. Over 60 per cent came from various parts of
B.G., including the lower mainland; 30 per cent were from Alberta and the
remaining 10 per cent from the Prairies, Eastern Canada, California, Ha
waii and Japan. Majority of those in attendance were the older Niseis in
their 50's and 60's. A few Sanseis tagged along with their parents to find'
out for themselves what the Reunion bit was all about. Only a few Isseis
were in attendance for they are now aged, and are either bed-ridden or
immobile.
However, the organizing committee did receive a very touching letter
from a 75-year-Old resident in Ontario. It read:
“Thank you for the Cannery Reunion Invitation. After all these years
there is hardly anyone left that we know. It will be mostly the young peo

A Statement from the
Montreal Redress Committee
That the National Redress Council should be an advis
ory and consultative body; and it should serve as a link to
and from the National Redress Committee to the com
munity. This would allow the National Redress Commit
tee to act for the people in an efficient and practical man
ner, and at the same time establish that the National
Redress Committee is ultimately reflecting the wishes of
the constituents as voiced through the National Redress
Council.
We firmly believe that what is transpiring now is ob
viously a clash amongst personalities and -in-fighting
amongst factions, and this must stop immediately for the
good of the community.
Recognizing the conflicts that have occured, it makes
it more demanding and urgent that we pull together and
"supplement each others efforts in a spirit of good faith.
Let history reflect that our eventual success was a com
munity effort where individuals and committees were
merely co-ordinatbrs working cooperatively for the com
mon good.
Submitted in a spirit of goodwill, we are sincerely;
