On March 20, 1944, the in

43 began to march but soon
stopped and refused com

the field house. A soldier
was ordered to take names of
those who would not march,
but they refused to identify
themselves and were placed
under arrest.
During the next few days,
106 Nisei were arrested for
failing to obey orders. A
senior officer told those
under arrest that the Army
could do nothing to resolve
the problem at the relocation
center, that it was the army's
business only to train them
for combat.
Of the 28 who refused to
train and were up for courtmartial, Brig. Gen. Wallace C.
Philon, commander at Ft. Mc

“lived for several years in
Japan and have become in

Twenty-one were eventual

violating Article Of War 64 —
willfully disobeying the

sentenced to dishonorable
discharge, total forfeiture of
pay and confinement at hard
labor from five to 30 years.
In November. 1945. the sen

years oy a special ciemency

on parole and released.
In January, 1981, the Army
changed the sentences' for
each of the 11 to honorable

who had been convicted have
sought no records correction,

“protested the undemocratic
action taken by the United
States government in dispossessing their relatives and
themselves simply because
they were of Japanese des
cent.”
On March 20, 1944, the in
fantry trainees were ordered
to march to a field house on
the post to hear an orienta
tion by -the training center
commander. A group of about
43 began to march but soon
stopped and refused com
mands to continue toward
the field house. A soldier
was ordered to take names of
those who would not march,
but they refused to identify
themselves and were placed
under arrest.
During the next few days,
106 Nisei were arrested for
failing to obey orders. A
senior officer told those
under arrest that the Army
could do nothing to resolve
the problem at the relocation
center, that it was the army's
business only to train them
for combat.
Of the 28 who refused to
train and were up for courtmartial, Brig. Gen. Wallace C.
Philon, commander at Ft. Mc
Clellan, told an Associated
Press reporter that the 28 had
“lived for several years in
Japan and have become in
doctrinated with the military
philosophy of that country.”
Twenty-one were eventual
ly tried and convicted for
violating Article Of War 64 —
willfully disobeying the
lawful command of a commi
ssioned officer. They were
sentenced to dishonorable
discharge, total forfeiture of
pay and confinement at hard
labor from five to 30 years.
In November. 1945. the sen
tences were reduced to three
years oy a special ciemency
action. In 1946, they were put
on parole and released.
In January, 1981, the Army
changed the sentences' for
each of the 11 to honorable
rather than a dishonorable
discharge. The remaining 10
who had been convicted have
sought no records correction,
the Armi Times noted.
Last year, the 11 testified
before the board, in request
ing further relief, that they
refused combat training “be
cause no one appeared to
listen to their complaints
